Lined with banana and coffee bean trees, this scenic corridor along the Mamalahoa Highway that hosts thousands of java junkies (and, let’s be honest, caffeine fiends) annually became a perfect basecamp for our week on the Big Island of Hawaii. A few minutes’ drive down the hill, we were kayaking and snorkeling in Kailua (Captain Cook’s) Bay where spinner dolphins playfully showed off their skills. A few minutes’ drive up the hill, we were above the clouds on Mauna Kea, bundled up in fleece, and sipping hot chocolate while the sun set 9,000 feet below. Aloha world!
